CM Punk returns to an NXT ring tonight for the first time in more than 16 years, challenging Grayson Waller for the NXT Championship on a special Wednesday edition of WWE's developmental brand. The match headlines a busy November 4 lineup that also includes an appearance by John Cena and another championship defense.
WWE's official preview confirms that Punk will face Waller for the title, with NXT airing live on The CW. The match has been announced, but its outcome remains unknown ahead of the broadcast.
How Punk's Title Challenge Came Together
The championship confrontation follows Waller's successful defense against Tony D'Angelo at Halloween Havoc on October 31. Waller left the event still holding the NXT title, but his celebration was interrupted by Halloween Havoc host Danhausen, who introduced a video message from Punk.
In that message, Punk made clear that he wanted a championship match with Waller. NXT General Manager Robert Stone subsequently made the contest official, according to WWE's match preview.
The circumstances of Waller's victory add another dimension to tonight's contest. POST Wrestling's Halloween Havoc report describes Waller using a weapon after the referee had been knocked down, then finishing D'Angelo to retain his championship. That result kept Waller in position to face Punk rather than surrendering the title before the challenge could take place.
Punk's return is significant beyond the belt itself. WWE says tonight marks his first match in an NXT ring in more than 16 years. The promotion has therefore placed a major returning name opposite its current champion rather than scheduling a routine title defense. Whether Waller can retain against Punk is the central question heading into the show.
Why NXT Is Airing on Wednesday
This week's episode is departing from its usual Tuesday slot. POST Wrestling reports that The CW's coverage of the US midterm elections prompted the schedule change. That puts NXT opposite AEW Dynamite's Blood & Guts edition on Wednesday, adding a notable scheduling dimension to the Punk-Waller match.
WWE has also announced several other attractions for the broadcast. Cena is scheduled to appear following his Monday Night Raw appearance, while NXT Women's Champion Kelani Jordan will defend her title against an opponent whose identity has not been announced. Jordan retained against Wren Sinclair at Halloween Havoc before learning that another defense awaited her.
The Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic final will feature Romeo Moreno and Noam Dar against Hank Walker and Tank Ledger. Cody Rhodes is scheduled to attend and present the trophy to the winners. Elsewhere, Chad Gable, Rey Fenix and Dragon Lee will team against The Vanity Project, whose members Jackson Drake, Brad Baylor and Ricky Smokes hold NXT championships.
Those matches and appearances give the episode several focal points, but Punk's championship opportunity remains its defining attraction. Waller arrives as the reigning champion after Halloween Havoc; Punk arrives as the challenger returning to NXT competition after a lengthy absence. WWE has confirmed the match, and the result will be decided on tonight's broadcast.
